What is Culture Competency (CC)?
CC is the ability to effectively and competently interact with people of different cultures. CC comprises four elements:
- Awareness of one's own cultural perspective
- Attitude towards cultural differences
- Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews
- Cross-cultural skills
Learning a language one immerses oneself into a specific culture and its way of seeing and interpreting the world. Developing CC results in an aptitude to understand, communicate with, and productively interact with people across cultures.
